Earthquakes, live

ESENDEFR

Methodology

Source: EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre), real-time data over WebSocket. Magnitude (moment magnitude scale, Mw) measures the energy released at the earthquake's source: each whole point is a huge, non-linear jump in energy (a M6 releases roughly 32 times more than a M5). Circle size grows with magnitude and its colour runs from grey (microquake) to red (strong); circles fade with age and the most recent one carries a pulsing halo. Adjust the minimum magnitude and the time window (24 h to 30 days) with the panel controls, or use the timeline to replay the sequence. Data refreshes automatically every 45 seconds; times are shown in mainland Spain time. Basemap: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
